This year, we took a day trip from Seattle to Mt St Helens and Mt Rainier in the last weekend before these two parks were closed for winter.

Contrary to what many people believe, they are actually not that close to Seattle. A one way drive takes more than 3 hours, pretty much like from the Bay Area to Lake Tahoe.

Since we didn't plan to stay out at night, we had to get up really early in the morning, and only start to drive back when it was totally dark.

There were not many visitors at Mt St Helens, but the views were absolutely stunning. I so wish we could have spent more time there.

Mt Rainier, on the other hand, was clearly a more popular tourist destination. The parking lots at the visitor center was almost full. Maybe people should spend some time visiting the neighboring Mt St Helens as well.
